Materials Needed:
- Sublimation printer
- Sublimation paper
- Heat press machine
- T-shirt (preferably 100% polyester or high polyester content)
- Silicone paper
- White felt (2 to 4 layers, cut to size to assist with uneven press caused by the material seems). This is not always need but for more chunky seams.
- Heat-resistant tape
- Lint roller
Steps:
- Design and Print: Create or select your design and print it on sublimation paper using a sublimation printer. Ensure the design is mirrored before printing.
- Prepare the T-Shirt: Preheat the heat press to 180°C (356°F).
- Place a piece of silicone paper or butcher paper inside the t-shirt to prevent any ink from bleeding through to the back.
- Position the Design: Place the printed sublimation paper face down on the t-shirt where you want the design to be. Use heat-resistant tape to secure the paper if needed.
- Press the T-Shirt:
- Cover the sublimation paper with another piece of silicone paper to protect both the heat press and your substrate.
- Use 2 to 4 layers of white felt, cut to size, to even out the material to the same level, ensuring there are no raised areas due to seams.
- Press the t-shirt at 180°C (356°F) for 70-80 seconds with medium pressure.
- Remove and Cool:
- Carefully remove the silicone paper and sublimation paper from the t-shirt.
- Allow the t-shirt to cool for a few moments before handling.
Tips:
- Pre-press the t-shirt for a few seconds to remove any moisture and wrinkles before placing the sublimation paper.
- Be aware of seams or folds in the garment that may raise the surface and create uneven pressure. Adjust the positioning or use white felt layers to ensure even pressure distribution.
- Ensure the heat press is evenly distributing pressure across the entire design.
- Use a lint roller to remove any lint or debris from the t-shirt surface before pressing.
- Remember, temperature and pressing time are guides, as each heat press is different. Test first to achieve the best results.
By following these steps, you’ll achieve vibrant, long-lasting sublimation prints on your t-shirts.
